Description

9 Beacon Terrace, Royal Marina Court, is a pair of terraced houses built around the 1830s by Jacob Harvey, currently undergoing conversion to flats. The exterior features a plastered finish and a slate mansard roof, with stacks that have rendered shafts and platbands.

The building has three storeys and an attic, with a 3:3-window front and front doors located to the left. There are platbands below the second-floor sill and a deep projecting eaves cornice with a blocking course. The right-hand house has a square-headed doorway and two ground floor windows that are likely twelve-pane sashes. The first floor has six over nine-pane sashes with balconies in place, while the second floor features twelve-pane sashes. The mansard roof includes 20th-century small-pane sashes.

The left-hand house is similar but includes a prominent corner bay. It has a round-headed doorway styled after the Southernhay, Exeter type, complete with reeded moulding, vermiculated rustication, and a key block featuring a carved or cast head. A Greek key moulding runs across the doorway and below the fanlight, which is an attractive design in lead with a central roundel and star motifs. The door is a 20th-century two-leaf small-pane type. The first floor has a six over nine-pane sash with a 20th-century balcony, and the second floor has a twelve-pane sash.

The interior has not been inspected but may still contain interesting features. This building is part of the same terrace as Nos 2-8 Beacon Hill, and an 1839 drawing of the terrace shows it before any alterations.
