Description

The Fish Quay is located at Torquay Harbour and is a Grade II listed structure. It was part of the harbour improvements made between 1803 and 1806 for Sir Lawrence Palk, initially designed by John Rennie but completed under the direction of Dr. Henry Beake, who was known for his expertise in financial matters. The quay is constructed from local grey limestone rubble and extends south from the North Quay. Historical correspondence from Beake to Palk's solicitor reveals his criticism of Rennie's design and execution, describing it as poorly planned and executed without proper oversight, although he acknowledged efforts to make it visually appealing despite the waste of labor.
