Description
The South Pier at Torquay Harbour is a structure built as part of the harbour improvements between 1803 and 1806 for Sir Lawrence Palk. The initial designs were by John Rennie, but the project was completed under the guidance of Dr. Henry Beake, who was a noted financial expert. The pier is constructed from local grey limestone rubble and extends east from Victoria Parade. Historical accounts indicate that Beake criticized Rennie's design and execution, describing it as poorly planned and executed without proper oversight, although he acknowledged efforts to make it visually appealing despite the inefficiencies involved.
