Description
Vale House is probably a former farmhouse, dating from the 17th century or earlier, with remodelling and extensions added in the early or mid-19th century. The house has solid rendered walls, with stone rubble visible inside, and a rear wing constructed of painted stone rubble. The roof is slate-covered, and rendered chimneys are situated on each gable end and on the ridge, off-centre to the right. The original layout was a three-room through-passage plan, featuring a hall chimney at the upper end and a small room beyond. A later stair and kitchen wing were added to the rear of the hall. The house is two storeys high and has a symmetrical facade with four windows. A late 20th-century half-glazed wooden door provides entry. The windows are late 20th-century replacements, featuring two-light wood casements with two horizontal glazing bars per light. Inside, the hall retains chamfered ceiling-beams without stops, a small fireplace with a rebuilt lintel, and a 19th-century panelled corner cupboard. A 19th-century wooden staircase is present, distinguished by its thin square balusters and column-newels. The rear kitchen has a fireplace with a segmental red-brick arch. A plank door with strap-hinges to the rear of the through-passage is also original.
