Description
This is a terrace of four houses located at 7-10 York Road, Torquay, dating from the 1860s. The houses combine to form a cohesive group and include front garden walls and piers. They are constructed with plastered elevations and slate roofs, with the roof at the left end of the terrace being hipped and the others gabled. Stacks are present with deep projecting cornices, although some cornices are missing.
The houses have a double-depth plan, with two rooms per floor, central entrances, and rear service wings. Each house presents a symmetrical three-window front. Key features include deep eaves, a sill band, shallow pilaster strips with sunk moulded panels, and ground-floor windows set within slightly recessed, segmental-headed stuccoed panels. A shallow, projecting porch is centrally positioned, featuring pilasters and a deep moulded cornice, sheltering a round-headed doorway with a four-panel door and fanlight containing two vertical glazing bars. The windows are sash windows, with horizontal glazing bars to both ground and first floors. The interiors were not inspected and may contain original features of interest. The terrace is a good example of a classical style building in Torquay.
