Description

Glen Andred is a villa located in Torquay, dating from around the 1850s. It was marked as Kernock on the 1866 Ordnance Survey map. The building is stuccoed and features a blocked-out façade with a two-span hipped slate roof, along with stacks that have rendered shafts and projecting cornices.

The villa has a rectangular double-depth main block with an entrance on the north side and service wings that extend at right angles on the west side. It stands two storeys high, with deep eaves supported by modillion brackets, stuccoed rusticated quoins, and an eaves band. The entrance front is asymmetrical, featuring two windows, a shallow projecting stack to the left, and a central doorway with a moulded architrave and a pediment supported by consoles. The half-glazed front door is flanked by glazed panels and topped with a wide overlight, all adorned with late 19th-century stained glass.

To the right, the ground-floor window has a moulded architrave and a floating cornice on consoles, with a high transomed window that also includes some stained glass. The service wing, set back to the right, has a half-glazed front door with stained glass and two 12-pane sash windows. The left return features a similar style with a basement that is railed off, likely with original railings.

The garden elevation on the south side showcases two-tier canted bays on the left and right, each with attractive tented lead canopies supported by fretted fascias on wrought-iron brackets. Most windows have been replaced with plate-glass sashes, and the sills of the centre first-floor windows have been lowered.

The interior has not been inspected, but it is noted that internal shutters remain, and there may be other interesting features. The stained glass is particularly highlighted as an attractive aspect of this villa.
