Description

This is an early to mid-18th century corner building located on High Street in Highworth, facing both High Street and Market Place. The building is composed of two parts, 40 and 40A. The High Street facade is painted brick, while 40A has chamfered stone quoins. The building has two-and-a-half storeys. It features brick flat arches above the first-floor windows and sash windows with glazing bars in flush, moulded frames; there are three windows facing High Street and seven facing Market Place, with two on the ground floor of No. 40. The ground floor contains early 20th-century shop fronts with moulded cornices and awnings. No. 40 has an eight-panel central door with a narrow overlight. There are traces of a band above the ground floor near the corner. A bold, modillion eaves cornice runs along the top of the building. The roof is slate, with stone slates on the Market Place side. There are gabled dormers – one facing High Street and four facing Market Place. Rear extensions have half-hipped gables.
