Description
This is an 18th-century building composed of two adjacent properties, 38 and 38A, located on the north side of High Street, Highworth. The building was originally comprised of two and a half storeys. The exterior of 38A is of painted rubble construction, while 38 is stuccoed. Each property has two bays. 38A features cross-glazed sash windows with flush-moulded frames, alongside two modern shop windows on the ground floor and a central door. Number 38 includes two small square bay windows on the first floor, with old wooden mullion and casement windows on the left side. Photographic evidence suggests a former double-gabled front from the late 17th century, which incorporated gabled first-floor oriels. A modern slate lean-to, supported by posts, partially obscures two projecting shop windows with glazing bars on the ground floor. The original stone slate roof has been replaced with imitation stone slates. Each property has two gabled dormers; 38A has a hipped roof. Brick ridge chimneys are located centrally and to the right of No 38A. The door to No 38 has six flush panels and is situated to the right of the doorway of No 38A. The rear is of rubble construction, and the roof structure is likely from the early to mid-18th century. A two-story extension from 38A projects towards the churchyard, dating to the early 18th century.
