Description
23 High Street is a Grade II* listed building, originally known as the Greyhound Inn, dating from around 1800. It has a roughcast front and stands two storeys high with an attic that is concealed by a tall parapet. The building features a moulded cornice and a central rain-water pipe topped with a fluted conical head. There are two original two-storey angled bay windows, with glazing bar sash windows on the first floor and bow windows on the ground floor that still show shatter grooves. The doorway is situated off-centre to the right and has an open pedimented cornice above a six-panel door. The interior of the ground floor has been altered. The roof is made of stone slate and includes two gabled dormers. At the rear, there are two long two-storey wings. The building is locally noted for its former sub-postmistress, Mrs. Mabel Shranks, who was known for filtering British Secret Agents on their way to Coleshill House during World War II.
