Description

Manor House and Manor Cottage is a building that has been divided into two dwellings. It dates from the late 16th century to the 20th century and is constructed from coursed Swindon stone rubble with squared quoins. The 18th century section features limestone ashlar quoins and decorative limestone rubble alongside the Swindon stone. The building has stone stacks with diamond brick shafts and is covered with stone tiles and ridges.

The core of the building, which is from the late 16th century, consists of two bays with an offset room that has a wide gable at the front. In the 18th century, it was lengthened by one bay and given a new facade. An early 19th-century dairy extension is located to the left, with a hayloft above it, and there is a late 19th-century brick addition at the rear that contains service rooms. A 20th-century lean-to porch with cloaks has also been added. The building is two stories high.

The core building features hollow chamfered stone-mullioned windows and three-light cross windows at the rear, which have pointed relieving arches. The gable now has an off-centre 19th-century tripartite four-pane sash window. The 18th-century remodelling of the right wing includes three bays with 16-pane sashes in flush quoined surrounds and a central flat-roofed porch with an original doorcase that has been reset forward. The original dairy to the left has a 16-pane sash window and a casement window. The rear late 19th-century service addition partially covers the original windows.

Inside, there is a 17th-century panelled room on the first floor that features Jacobean royal arms above the fireplace. The ground floor includes a large inglenook fireplace. Some minor alterations to the building are currently taking place as of July 1985.
