Description
The Church of St Augustine is an Anglican parish church built in 1907 by W.A.H. Masters. It is constructed of red brick and features an interlocking red tile roof. The church has a nave and apse, along with a north vestry and a bellcote, and a southwest porch. Designed in the North European Romanesque style, it includes round-headed lancets set between short pilasters, and above these, there is a triple lancet within shallow brick arches, topped with a brick corbel table. The apse is polygonal and adorned with Lombardic arcading in slightly recessed panels. The vestry has a round east end, and the bellcote has a pitched roof situated between the apse and vestry.
Inside, the church features a wide nave with six bays that are expressed as wall arcades. Pilasters support an open double purlin roof, which is held up by bracketed queen posts. The raised choir is enclosed with wrought iron railings and includes a prominent pulpit and lectern. The sanctuary in the apse is also railed. The font is made of limestone and is arcaded in a Romanesque style, depicting ten personified virtues. There is some stained glass from 1931-1932. In the west one-and-a-half bays, a late 20th-century screen encloses a ceiled hall. Overall, it is considered a successful design.
