Description
No. 123 High Street is a house located in the village street of Marshfield, dating from the early 18th century. It is constructed of ashlar stone with a Cotswold stone slate roof and features restored ashlar and rubble stacks, along with a moulded eaves cornice. The building has two storeys, cellars, and attics that are accessed through hipped dormers, which were previously topped with ball finials.
The facade consists of five bays, with French rusticated end pilasters and a continuous moulded string course over the ground floor. The ground floor has late 18th century paired glazing bar sash windows, while the first floor features 18-pane thick glazing bar sash windows set in moulded architraves, all with panelled aprons. The central entrance is a six-panel door beneath an overlight and framed by a bolection moulded surround, topped with a carved stone shell hood supported by carved consoles.
At the rear, there is a two-storey and attic wing with two bays, which includes a 19th century bay window on the ground floor. There is also a single-storey extension at the rear that was formerly a police station cell. This building is a notable example of provincial baroque architecture in the area.
