Description

The former stables, ox house, and barn, located 80 yards west of Castle Farmhouse, is a building that dates back to the 16th century and has been altered over time. Originally thought to be a longhouse, it has been converted for use as stables and an ox-house, and is now sometimes used as a museum. The structure is built of rubble and features a corrugated iron roof that covers remnants of thatch, secured with stalks of old-man's-beard and bindweed. It stands two storeys high, with a hall and an inner room to the west, and a cross passage behind the hall stack that is now blocked. To the east is a byre, while a stable wing to the southeast is a later addition. Many of the original windows and doorways have been blocked, but there are two 19th-century plank doors on the east gable end and a door on the south elevation. Inside, the hall fireplace features a chamfered four-centred wooden lintel set on stone jambs, along with a heavily moulded mantelshelf. The floor is flagged and cobbled, with drainage channels leading to the byre end. The roof structure includes five trusses with tie and collar beams, although some members have been removed, and it features three upper crucks with tenoned and trenched purlins, as well as re-used cruck members in the east wing.
