Description
Lower Chalkley Farmhouse is a farmhouse from the 17th century, which was extended to the east in the 18th century and further altered and extended to the rear in the 19th century. The building is constructed of rubble with quoins and features a Cotswold stone slate roof. It has an L-shaped plan with a dairy to the north and a baffle entry leading into a central unheated room, with a hall/kitchen to the left and a parlour to the right. The farmhouse is two storeys high with attics, which formerly had a hipped dormer. It has four bays with 19th-century casement windows, featuring two and three lights. The entrance door is located under a porch, offset to the left.
Inside, the farmhouse has stop-chamfered beams, and a window in the west wall has stone cavetto mullions. There is a blocked window in the central room on the first floor, which originally had a three-light casement with ovolo moulded mullions. The interior also includes a large number of ladder supports for cheese racks. In the attics, there are tie- and collar beam trusses with two tiers of butt purlins, and some timbers show signs of being smoke blackened, suggesting they may be reused.
