Description
Wood Lane Cottage is a farmhouse dating from the 15th century, with alterations made in the late 16th century and the 20th century. It is timber framed and sits on a rubble plinth, topped with a thatched roof that has overhanging eaves and is half-hipped at the west end. There is an off-centre rendered stack. The building is designed as an open hall house, featuring a cross passage with a hall and parlour to the east and a service room to the west. It has a single storey and an attic with an 'eyebrow' dormer. The cottage consists of three bays and has 20th-century casement windows. To the right, there is a 20th-century lean-to conservatory. Inside, you will find a chamfered doorframe with a two-centred head, and a tension brace at the east end. The hall features stop-chamfered beams and joists, an internal jetty at the parlour end, and a shoulder-headed doorframe. There is a jowelled post on the north wall and a fireplace with a cambered and chamfered wooden lintel. The passage also has stop-chamfered beams and a shoulder-headed doorway. The roof comprises tie and collar beam trusses, all with windbraces. This cottage is an extremely rare example of timber framing in an area that is predominantly made up of stone-built houses.
