Description
The Old Church of St Helen, located on Church Road in Rudgeway, is a Grade II listed building featuring a tower and a section of the north wall of the nave. The tower dates from around 1400, while the wall is from the 12th century. The structure is built of rubble with limestone and sandstone freestone dressings.
The Perpendicular style tower is three stages high, constructed in rubble with limestone open chequers. It has a four-centred arched door with a stone surround and drip mould, and above this is a three-light window with intersecting tracery, a hood mould with stops, and a relieving arch. The upper stages include slit windows and two-light windows. The east side of the tower features a high pointed arch leading to the nave, along with weathered diagonal buttresses and string courses.
The north wall includes a plain, round-headed blocked door with diaper moulding and carved imposts, as well as a two-light window with a pointed arch and trefoil heads. The wall is accented with stone quoins and shows remains of a coped gable end and kneeler. Inside, some beams remain at the upper stages of the tower.
