Description

Farmhouse, dating to the late 16th century, with a date of 1634 above the front door, and later additions. It is constructed of rubble, with limestone ashlar dressings, and has a pantiled roof with stacks at the centre and west, featuring ashlar diagonals. The building is in an L-shaped plan. The main part is two storeys high, with a central porch that has Ionic pilasters and a pediment bearing a shield in the tympanum. The front door is a four-centred arch with studs and strap hinges, set within a moulded architrave, and is flanked by six-light, ovolo-mullioned windows with relieving arches. A similar window is above the door, also with a hood mould. A 19th-century wing extends to the east, two storeys high with two windows, and another extends to the west, with four windows across two bays. All the 19th-century windows are mullion and transom casements. The ground floor of the west wing has a moulded door architrave, now blocked, extending to a three-light ovolo-mullioned casement. The gable end of the east wing contains a twelve-light ovolo-mullioned and transom window on both the ground and first floors, with a 19th-century panelled and glazed door set in. The rear elevation is two storeys high with four windows mirroring the front. A central, first-floor oval bull's eye window is set within a moulded surround, and a 19th-century inserted door has a drip mould. Inside, the closed string staircase has twisted balusters and square-topped newels. Two rear rooms contain late 16th-century plaster ceilings with a frieze depicting a Tudor rose, pelicans, masks, and shells. A central, panelled rear room features a Tudor-arched stone fireplace with a decorative frieze, putto, scrolled brackets and a dentilled cornice.
