Description
Sheepcombe Farmhouse is a farmhouse, now a house, that dates from the mid-17th century, with late 17th-century additions to the rear and 18th and 19th-century alterations. The building is constructed of rubble with a rendered finish and features a treble Roman tiled roof, gable stacks with brick diagonal chimneys, and a double Roman tiled rear wing. It has a U-plan layout with a symmetrical front, standing 2½ storeys tall and featuring seven windows, all of which are sashes in plain reveals. The central entrance is a 4-panelled door, with the lower section unpanelled. The front has three gables, each with a 9-pane fixed light, and there is a single-storey 20th-century wing to the right.
The west elevation is also 2½ storeys high and has three windows, including the rear wing. Two windows on the ground floor are blocked, while the first floor features two 6-light casements on the left and one blocked window in brick on the right. The central gable has a 2-light casement with a timber lintel, and there is a stack to the left with diagonal chimneys. The east elevation shows a blank gable end and a rear wing that contains a former dairy and wash-house, which is 2 storeys tall with six windows. This elevation includes a canted bay on the left that extends through both storeys, varied windows, and two passage entries, one with a flat head on the left and the other with a round head on the right.
The rear of the farmhouse has varied windows, including an 8-light casement on the first floor of the east wing, featuring a loop catch and leaded lights, with square moulded mullions on the outside and ovolo-moulded on the inside. There is a blocked opening on the ground floor to the left and a door, both with timber lintels. The interior was not accessible at the time of the survey, which noted that a comprehensive restoration was in progress in July 1984.
