Description
The Winding House, located near Naishcombe House at Wick Quarry, is a winding house dating from around 1895, built for an ochre works. It is constructed of stone rubble and features a corrugated-iron sheet roof with gabled ends. This small, single-storey square building has battered stone side walls that support a gable-ended roof. The north end is open, while the south end has double doors.
Inside, the side walls support a winding drum made of iron and timber, which includes a brake on the side. Wick Ochre Works, established by Burgess and Co. around 1895, is represented by this winding house, which is the only remaining structure from the works. It is situated at the top of a dramway that connects the quarries to the processing works in the valley below. This winding house is a rare example of a building associated with the pigment industry.
