42-46, HIGH STREET

This is a house, originally a single building, now divided into three separate dwellings, situated on the west side of Wickwar High Street. The core of the building dates to the 15th century, with alterations made in the 17th and 20th centuries. The exterior is rendered, although the rendering has been removed from number 42, revealing the underlying stone and timber lintels. It features a double Roman tiled roof and brick stacks.

The original layout consisted of three rooms and a cross passage. Number 42 occupies the service end of the building, number 44 occupies the original two-bay hall, which has been floored over, with a stack inserted into the cross passage and alterations made in the 17th century, and number 46 occupies the original inner room or parlour. The building is single-storied with attics, and has four steep gabled roofs.

Windows include 2- and 3-light casement windows in number 42, and mid-19th century 4-pane sash windows in numbers 44 and 46. Number 44 has a plank door set within a double ovolo moulded surround featuring a cambered head.

Inside number 42 is a kitchen, and the room above has a chamfered doorframe with a four-centred head. The roof of the hall (number 44) features two raised cruck principals with curved feet; one has an arch-braced collar. The roof timbers are stop-chamfered and smoke-blackened. The main timbers throughout are stop-chamfered with run-out stops.
