Description

This is a house, now divided into two separate dwellings, dating to the late 16th and early 17th centuries, with later alterations. The exterior is roughcast and colour-washed timber-frame, built upon a high brick plinth. It has a plain tile roof with ridge stacks. Number 5 retains a lobby-entry plan, which originally included a service room and the remains of a cross-passage layout, with the original rear door still present. Number 3 appears to be derived from the parlour element of the original house. The building is two storeys high and has a five-window front, featuring mainly two-light casement windows. Number 3 has a six-panel door with a flat hood, flanked by four-pane sash windows. Number 5 has a partly glazed door to the left, and two two-light casement windows in the centre and to the right. The interior of Number 5 features tall panel framing with jowled posts and a surviving partition from the original service room. A winder stair is located in front of a partly reconstructed stack and a 20th-century fireplace. The roof structure includes a clasped-purlin arrangement with cranked windbraces. The interior of Number 3 was not inspected. Number 5 exhibits an interesting early lobby-entry plan which may have influenced the layout of Number 3. Numbers 1 to 5 (odd) are significant as a group.
