Description

The Catherine Wheel is a public house located on High Street in Marshfield, dating from around 1680 to 1690. The building is constructed of ashlar, with the ground floor painted, and features a double Roman tiled roof, with slate at the rear. It has a striking balustraded parapet made up of turned balusters and panelled pedestals, along with a heavily moulded cornice. The structure has two storeys above a plinth and cellars, and it is composed of seven bays with chamfered end quoins and a moulded string course above the ground floor.

The ground floor has 32-pane thick glazing bar sash windows, while the first floor has 24-pane windows, all set in bolection moulded surrounds with moulded cills and plain aprons, although two of the first-floor windows are blocked. A central six-panel door is framed by a bolection moulded surround and topped with a finely carved shell hood supported by consoles. There is also a projecting iron lamp bracket. On the first floor, a projecting cast iron sign and bracket are present.

At the rear, there is a large painted rubble wing that is two storeys high with an attic, featuring four 2-light casement windows. Inside, the ground floor rooms boast moulded beams and fireplaces, with the left room fully panelled and featuring large raised panels and bolection moulded surrounds, along with cupboards flanking the fireplace. The interior also includes a central wide passage. This building is an excellent local example of provincial baroque architecture.
