Description

This is a pair of late 18th-century houses in Broad Street, Sodbury, with an older, 17th-century gabled wing incorporated into the right side of number 72. The main block is constructed of rubble stone with a double Roman tile roof. It has a brick stack. The front has two storeys and four windows, which are sash windows with vertical glazing bars in moulded surrounds. A modern shop front occupies the ground floor of number 74, and a modern bay with a heavy fascia is located on the ground floor of number 72. Both houses have modern doorways. To the right of number 72 is a rubble stone extension with brick alterations. It has a mix of pantile, slate, and double Roman tile roofs, and two storeys. The gabled section of the extension has one off-centre window on each floor, which are sash windows with a single glazing bar in flush moulded timber frames, and are squat in shape. A coach entrance features a heavily timbered frame with chamfers, widened at the impost, and a projecting bracket on the right-hand side. The first floor is jettied, and the 19th-century gable is finished with a fretted barge board and applied timbering.
