Description
Marshfield House is a house dating from the late 17th century, with a remodel in the 1730s. It is built of ashlar and features a hipped roof covered with 20th-century tiles, which is set behind a moulded coped parapet and a moulded eaves cornice. The building has two storeys, a basement, and attics with hipped dormers. The façade consists of one bay, three bays, and one bay, with the central three bays slightly advanced and topped with a pediment. The windows are sash style, featuring thick glazing bars and segmental heads, with the central windows being recessed and inset, complete with keystones. The entrance has a central six-panel door within a doorcase that includes pilasters and a frieze with triglyphs, all beneath a segmental pediment. There is one cross window on the side elevation and two on the rear elevation. Inside, the kitchen features an ogee moulded fire surround and a chamfered beam. The staircase has a panelled dado, a closed string, and turned balusters. The entrance hall boasts a fine carved fireplace, while the rear bedroom has a bolection moulded fireplace. This house is a notable example of provincial baroque architecture.
