Description
Fosse Lodge, also known as East Lodge, along with its adjoining gates and gate piers, was built around 1857-1860 by J.K. Colling for J.C. Orred. This Gothic-style lodge, which serves as the entrance to Ashwicke Hall, is constructed from coursed squared rubble with freestone dressings and quoins. The roofs are concealed behind embattled parapets and a moulded string course, giving it an irregular and asymmetrical appearance over two storeys.
On the right side, there is a single bay featuring 2-light cross windows with chamfered mullions and surrounds. The ground floor includes a triangular bay window topped with an embattled parapet and a cornice that is intricately carved with beasts and heads. To the left, a three-stage tower rises, complete with an embattled parapet and gargoyles. The open lower stage of the tower has a pointed arch beneath a hood mould, leading to a wrought iron gate with Y-tracery and decorative scrolls. Inside, there is a ribbed vault adorned with carved bosses, and a pointed plank door fitted with decorative strap hinges. A single pointed window with a cusped head is located at the first stage of the tower.
A buttress to the left of the tower acts as a gate pier, while the decorative wrought iron gates are flanked by another gate pier that features a crested parapet with a band of fleurons. This pier has buttresses on either side and is capped with a pyramidal top, which is surmounted by a hare standing on its hind legs, holding a shield that bears arms.
