Description
Nos. 4 and 5 are a pair of estate houses, now combined into one, built in 1847 for the Earl of Dacie's estate. The buildings are constructed of rubble with freestone dressings and feature a Cotswold stone slate roof with overhanging bracketed eaves and octagonal ashlar and brick chimneys. The design follows a T-plan in a plain Tudor Gothic style and consists of two storeys with gables. Each cottage has two bays, with No. 5 being the rear cottage. The windows include single and two-light casements with chamfered surrounds and under dripmoulds. There is a single bay extension at the rear and a projecting gabled porch with a studded plank door to the left of each section. Avening Green appears to have developed as an informal estate hamlet.
