Description
St Elizabeth's House of Rest is a large house located on the edge of Plymouth, dating from the early 19th century and extended in the late 19th century. The exterior features incised stucco and render with decorative bands, and it has dry slate hipped roofs behind a parapet. The building includes curved ramps or scrolled brackets leading to stuccoed axial and lateral stacks, which are topped with a moulded entablature. It has a large double-depth plan with service wings and is two storeys high, presenting a five-window range to the principal garden front. Most of the original windows are hornless sashes with glazing bars, while the later part features horned sashes. The ground floor includes French windows and an ornate iron verandah topped with a tented copper roof. The right-hand return has a large two-storey canted bay window and a two-storey square bay window. The left-hand return features a round-arched stair window with intersecting glazing bars and a later projecting ground floor that includes a pedimented doorway flanked by pilasters with Corinthian capitals. The interior has not been inspected but is reported to retain many original features of interest.
