Description

No. 11 Whimple Street, which includes No. 1A St Andrew's Street, is a commercial building located on a corner site in Plymouth. It was built in the mid-19th century and features a stucco exterior with decorative stucco details. The roof is concealed behind a parapet that has a moulded and modillioned cornice. The building has a large corner plan with a splayed entrance bay. It stands three storeys tall and has a façade with five bays on the upper floors and one bay on the ground floor facing each street. The upper floors have original hornless sash windows with glazing bars, while the ground floor has 20th-century transomed windows.

The stucco detailing includes a plinth, channelled rustication on the ground floor, an impost string, and rusticated voussoirs above segmental arches. There is a sill string above the ground floor, and giant pilasters with composite capitals flank the upper floor bays. The first-floor window openings are pilastered and feature moulded hoods on consoles, with swagged festoons between them, while the second-floor window openings have moulded architraves. The wide doorway at the splayed corner has an overlight and a pair of glazed and panelled doors, with an additional doorway to the right of the right-hand return. The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest.
