Description
Nos. 1, 2, and 3 St Andrew's Street is a terrace of three shop premises with residential accommodation, built in the mid-19th century. The buildings are constructed of stucco with decorative stucco details and feature stepped roofs that are hidden behind open-panelled parapets above an entablature with a modillion cornice. The roof dormers are not visible, and there are deep brick end stacks. Each house has a double-depth plan, originally consisting of one room (the shop) at the front and an entrance hall on the right.
The terrace is three storeys high plus attics, with each house having a two-window range. The original hornless sash windows are set under segmental arches, most of which have glazing bars. The first-floor sashes are framed within pilastered surrounds that have moulded hoods supported by consoles, featuring Baroque-style carved details. The first-floor surrounds are shorter, resting on sills with brackets and richly-carved keyed heads. The ground floor of each house is adorned with a full-width moulded entablature over pilasters. No. 3, located on the right, retains its original channelled rustication surrounding a small keyed segmental-arched shop window, while the other two houses have later shopfronts. Tall overlights are positioned above the tall doorways.
The interior has not been inspected but is expected to contain interesting features, including rich stucco detail. This terrace is part of a significant group of buildings in the historic centre of Plymouth.
