Description

This is a mid-19th century terrace of houses located on Citadel Road in Plymouth, forming part of a planned development on the Hoe. The houses are constructed of stucco with slate roofs hidden behind a parapet incorporating a moulded entablature and a modillion cornice. The roofs also have dormers, and there are deep brick end stacks topped with multiple old clay pots.

The houses are arranged with a double-depth plan and are three storeys high plus an attic over a basement, each house having a two-window front. Original stucco detailing includes channelled rustication and voussoirs to segmental arches on numbers 258 and 260, along with string courses and sill strings to the upper floors. The windows originally had 12-pane hornless sashes to number 262 and are otherwise altered or are later horned sashes. Each house has a pilastered and pedimented porch with a modillion cornice and panelled sides, accompanied by a two-pane overlight and a panelled and glazed door.

The interior of the buildings has not been inspected, but it is likely to contain features of interest.

Subsidiary features include original forecourt walls and steps, along with wrought iron railings in front of number 262. These railings feature arrow-head finials to the shafts, acorn finials to the stanchions, and anthemion heads on the newels.

The terrace is an important example of early 19th century town planning, designed by Foulston and his pupil Wightwick and reflecting Plymouth's progressive approach to urban development at the time.
