Description
The Kings Hill Gazebo is a Grade II* listed structure built in 1822, located in Devonport Dockyard, Plymouth. This single-storey gazebo features a rendered wood frame topped with a swept conical metal sheet roof and has a unique single-room plan with four concave sides.
The exterior showcases a four-bay range with steeply concave sides supported by eight timber fluted Doric columns that lead up to a circular entablature adorned with shallow modillions. Each side of the gazebo has French doors with margin panes. A notable inscription on the structure commemorates the visit of King George III, stating, "TO PERPETUATE THE RECOLLECTION OF THE VISIT OF HIS MAJESTY GEORGE III OF BLESSED AND GLORIOUS MEMORY, AND OF HIS MAJESTY'S ADMIRATION OF THE ROCK ON WHICH IT STANDS, AND THE SCENE AROUND. THIS BUILDING WAS ERECTED IN THE YEAR 1822."
The Kings Hill area, which is partly constructed from large rubble blocks, features a statue of a female figure on the southeast side, flanked by niches and covered with iron. Inside, the gazebo has a plain octagonal design. Historically, it was built to commemorate King George III's visit and is situated on land that was left isolated due to excavation for the South Yard, reflecting the area's former topography. The gazebo is part of a group that includes the gate and railings surrounding the hill, connected by a winding pebbled path.
