Description
White Yarn House is a building from 1763 located in Devonport Dockyard, Plymouth. It is constructed of limestone rubble with stone dressings and has a slate roof. The building has a rectangular open plan and stands two storeys high, featuring a three-window range. Notable architectural details include rusticated quoins, a plat band, a flat cornice, and a parapet with coped end gables. The east side has a central doorway with a metal door, a tall northern window, a blind ground-floor opening, and three first-floor openings beneath the plat band. The south side has two small openings situated between the first-floor windows.
Inside, the building features a king post roof. Historically, yarn was stored here before being sent to the Tarring House, where it was coated with tar. Along with the Tarring and Wheel House and the Tarred Yarn House, White Yarn House is part of the most complete surviving yarn and tarring complex in a Naval rope yard, representing an early development of process flow techniques.
