Description
The Tarred Yarn Store is a significant building located in Devonport Dockyard, dated 1769 as indicated on the hoppers. Constructed from limestone rubble with dressings and a slate roof, it features a rectangular open plan design. The building stands two storeys high with a basement and has a five-window range. Its exterior includes a plinth, plat band, flat cornice, and parapet, with eared flat surrounds around the openings, a central doorway, and blind windows on the first floor. The south gable has a raised stepped top with square plinths supporting ball finials on the sides and top, an inserted vehicle entrance, and three blind oculi. The west side has three small blind openings between the ground-floor windows, while the east side displays two well-preserved hoppers inscribed with "GR."
Inside, the store features a king post roof that supports a raised walkway, along with rope-winding horizontal capstans used for distributing the yarn throughout the store. Historically, this building was used to store tarred yarn that had been wound onto bobbins before being transported to the now-demolished West Ropehouse for laying. It, along with the White Yarn House and Tarring and Wheel Houses, forms part of one of the most complete complexes of tarring and yarn stores in a Naval dockyard.
