Description
The Devonport Column is a commemorative structure built in 1824 by John Foulston, located on Ker Street in Plymouth. This impressive monument features a granite fluted Greek Doric column topped with a railed platform that supports a flagpole. The column stands on a panelled plinth, which is set on a high stepped granite ashlar platform that is accessed by steps. On the south side of the column, there is a cast-iron plaque adorned with a crown and inscribed with the words: "Devonport, January 1st 1824." This monument marks the renaming of Plymouth Dock to Devonport and commemorates the Charter of the Borough. It is part of a significant group of civic structures designed by Foulston, recognized as some of the most remarkable for their time in the country.
