Description
Rose Cottage is an overseers' office built between 1850 and 1860. It is constructed from snecked limestone ashlar and features a hipped slate roof with an ashlar ridge stack. The building has a two-room plan, with each room having a separate entry. It is a single storey structure with a two-window northern front, which has segmental arches over two horned 3/3-pane sash windows. At each end of the front, there are round-arched doorways with flush panelled doors and plain fanlights. The eastern end has a similar window, and there are similar sashes in a canted bay window with a cornice on the western side. The rear of the building has a three-window range, with the middle window being blind.
Inside, the interior was altered around 1985 and features back-to-back central fireplaces. The room on the right includes a late 20th-century Classical style fireplace with an iron grate and a decorative tile surround. The large bay window indicates the building's original purpose for supervising the Yard, making it quite a rare example. Rose Cottage is part of an outstanding group of naval manufacturing buildings.
