Description

The Scrieve Board at Devonport Dockyard is a 20th-century structure with a timber frame that features modern cladding of corrugated steel on the sides and a metal sheet mansard roof with plastic lights. Beneath the inserted wooden floor lies a stone slip.

The building has an apsidal aisled plan aligned roughly west to east, measuring 88.7 metres long and 31.4 metres wide, with its gabled west end facing the River Tamar. The former slip is covered by a timber floor supported on brick pillars, while original masonry remains beneath, along with some later materials. The slip cover structure includes compound timber stanchions supporting cantilevered principal rafters, which are braced to the stanchions and to a collar beneath the shallow pitched roof. The principal rafters extend over the outer aisles and are supported by two braces. The sides are clad in corrugated sheeting, and the wide eaves of the roof overhang. The west end is enclosed with slanting metal sheeting supported by a 20th-century metal frame.

On the south elevation, near the west end, there is a 20th-century taking-in door with a metal-framed cover. The wooden floor bears drawn or painted markings that relate to the building's previous use in shipbuilding. In the southeast corner, there is a temporary structure from the 1980s that contains offices, though it is not of special interest. The interior also features various 20th and 21st-century fixtures and fittings, including lighting and heating equipment, which are not of special interest.

Additionally, at the west end of the building on the northern side, a room has been created under the roof overhang using brick walling. Towards the center of the north side, a corrugated metal shed has been erected. Both the brick walling and the shed are not of special interest.
