Description
No. 80 Compton Avenue is a former vicarage for Emmanuel Church, built in 1906. The building features roughcast render and steep red tile roofs with projecting eaves that have exposed rafters, as well as projecting verges with exposed purlins and jettied canted oriels at both the front and rear. It has an L-shaped plan, with a pair of cross wings at the front and a lower service wing at right angles to the rear left. This Arts and Crafts design is two storeys tall, plus attics, and has a three-window range at the front. The wide wooden mullioned windows are fitted with leaded glass. The central flat-roofed porch is supported by scrolled brackets and features a buttressed doorway with a planked door and a small window to the right, along with a canted bay window to the right of the porch.
Inside, there is a large entrance and stair hall that includes a large open-well staircase with an open string, panelled newels, moulded handrails, and splat balustrades. The newel posts extend upwards to support the moulded beams of a coffered and corbelled ceiling. There is an eared chimneypiece in the right-hand room, though the rest of the interior has not been inspected. This building is a notable example of a restrained design influenced by architects such as Voysey and Parker.
