Description
The revetment wall to the east of the Quadrangle is a retaining wall built in the 1850s. It is made of squared limestone rubble with ashlar towers and dressings. The tall battered wall extends approximately 250 meters north from the North Yard Offices in three sections. At the southern end, there is a square stair tower featuring a round-arched entrance in the tall plinth, open arched windows at the top, and a granite string beneath a coped parapet. The wall steps out slightly with the square tower and turns east at the northern end to connect to another tower in the inner corner. Additionally, a section of the wall runs about 35 meters to the east, featuring an arched walkway on the southern side that connects to a tower on the perimeter wall. This impressive retaining wall was constructed for the cleared site of the Quadrangle, which previously housed reservoirs that were infilled and supplied the hydraulic system for the North Yard docks. It serves as a striking backdrop to the North Yard, aligning with the North Yard Offices.
