Description

Number 8 Dock is a dry dock located in Devonport, Plymouth, which began construction in 1896 and was extended twice before 1914. It is built from Cornish granite, with additional supplies sourced from Norway. The dock measures over 700 feet in length and features a traditional design with altars that step inwards, flights of steps, and arched entries.

Historically, this dock was part of the Keyham extension to the Devonport Dockyards, developed to meet the increasing demand for docking and berthing facilities. Devonport was recognized as a crucial naval port, especially during wartime, and by 1914, it had become the largest naval base in Western Europe. Notably, five Dreadnoughts, along with other battleships and cruisers, were constructed here as part of Admiral Fisher's fleet expansion before 1914. Number 8 Dock, along with its related Pumping Station, serves as an example of the largest shipbuilding docks in a naval yard, representing a significant period in naval construction that held national strategic importance and international relevance.
