Description

The Royal Naval Arms is a public house located on Saltash Road in Devonport, dating from the late 19th century. The building features glazed ceramic tiles on the ground floor and stucco on the first floor, topped with a dry slate roof adorned with red crested clay ridge tiles and brick end stacks. It has a double-depth plan and stands two storeys tall with a four-window range. The first floor retains original four-pane horned sash windows. The ground floor showcases an original polychrome ceramic tile shopfront, which includes a panelled stall riser and columns that separate moulded and keyed round-arched openings. These openings contain two pairs of windows and a doorway on the left and right, with decorated spandrels between the arches, as well as transomed windows and overlights featuring leaded glazing. The interior has been remodelled in the 20th century. The building is notable for its exceptionally well-designed and complete tiled frontage and it forms part of a fine group of listed buildings at HMS Drake.
