Description

The Western Public House is a public house located on a street corner in Devonport, Plymouth. It was built in the mid to late 19th century and features a stucco exterior with a dry slate roof that is hipped at the front end, topped with a stuccoed parapet that has a moulded entablature and a heavy cornice. The building has a brick end stack on the left side and a stack over the apex of the hip, with many old chimney pots visible.

The structure has a deep rectangular plan with a canted entrance bay at the corner. It stands three storeys tall, with the left-hand return and street front displaying a configuration of three bays, one bay, and two bays. The ground floor features a plinth, channelled rustication, and voussoirs, while the ends are rusticated with Tuscan pilasters and giant pilasters above, complemented by giant window architraves.

The first floor retains original four-pane hornless sash windows, while the floor above has horned copies. The ground floor also includes horned sash windows, with tripartite windows on the left-hand return and a central doorway that has remnants of a pediment. There are additional doorways at the splayed corner and the centre of the street front, featuring panelled doors and plain glazed overlights. The interior has not been inspected.
