Description
The walls and bollards at No. 3 Basin were constructed between 1844 and 1848. They feature channelled rustication and are made of stone-coped granite. The walls extend approximately 800 meters around the basin and include steps on the north and south walls, terminating at the caisson that closes the southwest entrance. A former caisson entrance to the north is now blocked. Cast-iron bollards, inscribed with "VR," are set into the quay edge. This structure occupies a formal position in front of the Quadrangle, which is the largest engineering complex built for the navy, and is recognized for its significant location. It is better preserved than the Steam Basin at the similar steam engineering complex in Portsmouth. These facilities were designed to service the increasingly large warships of the time and, along with the Quadrangle, demonstrate the navy's commitment to developing a steam-powered fleet.
