Description

Tudor Lodge is a merchant's house dating from the late 17th century, located on Fore Street in Plympton St Maurice. The building features a timber frame with boarding on the first floor and rendered rubble on the ground floor. It has a very steep asbestos slate roof with a deep moulded bracketed eaves cornice. There are two hipped roof dormers that contain late 19th or early 20th century 8-pane, 2-light casements, and a large rubble stack is positioned on the left side.

The house is likely two rooms deep, with one room at the front left, an entrance hall slightly to the right of center, and a wide carriage entrance passage on the right. The exterior is two storeys plus an attic, featuring a four-window range with mid-19th century 6-pane hornless sashes. A moulded wooden cornice is present over the ground floor, which has 20th century paired 4-pane horned sashes on the left. The ground floor also includes an 18th century pilastered doorcase with a moulded entablature, panelled reveals, and a 6-panel door with glazed top panels.

Although the interior was not inspected, a former listing description notes the presence of an original dog-leg staircase with a closed string, moulded handrail, turned balusters, and square newels with finials and pendants. The use of boarding on the front of the building is an early and significant surviving example of this construction technique.
