Description
Plymouth High School for Girls is a school building dating from 1877. It is constructed from Plymouth limestone with freestone dressings and features steep dry slate roofs, including a parapet on the front roof. The building is designed in the Tudor Gothic style and has a deep overall L-shaped plan.
The exterior presents a symmetrical three-bay front with a central recessed bay. It includes a plinth, lintel strings, and first-floor sill strings. The central bay features a moulded corbelled oriel on a buttress, flanked by two 4-centred arched doorways with hoodmoulds, original overlights, and wide glazed and panelled doors with coloured leaded glass. The canted oriel has a very steep polygonal roof behind a parapet, with a three-light mullioned centre and single sidelights, as well as a panelled apron with shields. There is a single light window on either side of the oriel. Each flanking bay has a three-light mullioned window above a pair of transomed two-light windows, separated by a buttress.
The left-hand return bay features a coped gable above a stepped four-light window, which is situated over a pair of three-light windows. This return is then built forward as a symmetrical front with a central gabled bay that contains a pair of two-light transomed windows, along with similar pairs of windows in the flanking bays.
The interior has not been inspected. This building is a good example of its type, with strong articulation and notable detailing on the front facing North Hill.
