Description

Hooe Manor is a country house built in 1777 for Christopher Harris, and subsequently divided into flats. It is constructed of Caen stone ashlar, with a plinth, mid-floor bands, rusticated quoins, and a dry slate hipped roof with a central valley and a moulded cornice embellished with modillions. The roof is punctuated by four axial and two taller end stacks.

The house follows a square, double-depth plan with flanking wings projecting to the rear, creating an overall U-shaped form. The symmetrical front elevation has five windows to each floor. The original hornless sash windows retain glazing bars, although those on the upper floor are substantially shorter. A central distyle Roman Doric porch features triglyphs and a triangular pediment, with a glazed and panelled door. The rear elevation is slightly asymmetrical, incorporating a tall first-floor stair window and a window above, located to the left of centre, alongside a segmental-arched, pilastered porch on the right.

The interior remains largely complete, despite alterations following its conversion. A fine stair hall features an open-well staircase with an open string, ramped handrail, turned balusters, column newels, and a panelled dado. The ceiling above is decorated with Adam-style plasterwork, and cornices incorporate fluted friezes. Adam-style chimneypieces are present, surrounded by engraved tiles manufactured in Liverpool in the 1770s. This is a distinguished mid-18th century house, with the flanking blocks contributing to a near-Palladian appearance.
