Description
Grove Farmhouse is a late 16th/early 17th century farmhouse, with later alterations and additions, located in Yatton. The farmhouse is constructed of rubble, with the central bays rendered at the rear and left return. It has pantiled roofs with raised coped verges and large external stacks on the sides and rear. The building follows an H-plan with a through passage.
The farmhouse is two storeys high, featuring a 1:4:2 window arrangement. The central bays have an off-centre gabled porch to the passage. The outer opening of the porch has a segmental head, while the inner opening has a moulded triangular head designed to allow passage of barrels. The studded door is fitted with large raised fillets and strap hinges. The ground floor left side has a 2-light and a 3-light C19 casement window, along with a C20 stack in the angle with a wing to the left. The first floor left side has a small 2-light casement and a 2-pane light above the porch. To the right, there are two probable C19 wooden cross windows with iron stanchions, followed by two 3-light C20 casement windows with drip mould, and an attic 2-light casement with drip mould. A wing to the right incorporates C20 garage doors, a loading door, and a 2-light C20 window with a continuous drip mould. A small chamfered window frame is present in the attic with a drip mould.
The left return side has a ground floor 3-light casement, two 3-light casements under the eaves, and a moulded door frame with re-used strap hinges, one fleur-de-lys on the door, and a pitched wooden hood. A single-storey outhouse is attached to the rear left, featuring three door openings. The rear of the wing to the right has a small 2-light attic casement, a lean-to with a half-glazed door and a 2-light casement. The rear of the wing to the left has a ground floor opening with a chamfered frame and mullions; a drip mould remains to the right, and a drip mould is positioned centrally on the first floor. A lean-to in the angle has a heavy door with strap hinges in a plain frame. The rear of the central range reveals the remains of a window at first floor left, a large external stack, a cross window at ground floor left, a rear passage door within an ovolo-moulded frame, and a C20 lean-to porch. Ground floor right has a 2-light casement, and first floor right has two 3-light casements.
The interior features a heavy, deep-chamfered and stopped beam to the left of the passage, a C19 straight stair to the rear, and rooms in the wing to the left with beams having a slightly shallower chamfer, set laterally. A fireplace to the end stack has a heavy cambered chamfered lintel. The first floor left door frame to the centre room is chamfered and stopped, with a door fitted with strap hinges. The roof over the centre range is of 5 bays, featuring principal rafters, collars, and two rows of purlins. The roof over the wing to the left, of 3 bays, is similar but without collars. A room to the right of the passage contains a wide stone fireplace with a chamfered pointed segmental arch. Rooms in the wing have similar stone fireplaces at ground and first floor, with a chamfered and stopped door frame in a partition wall where only the upright members remain. A C19 roof covers the wing to the left, which was not used as living accommodation at the time of a survey conducted in April 1985.
