Description
YATTON C.P. BROCKLEY WAY (west side) Claverham ST 46 NE 5/143 Grove Farmhouse 13.10.52 - II Farmhouse. Late C16/early C17 with later alterations and additions. Rubble, centre bays, rear and left return rendered, pantiled roofs with raised coped verges and large external stacks to sides and rear. H-plan, through passage. 2 storeys, 1:4:2 windows, centre bays have off-centre gabled porch to passage, outer opening with segmental head, inner opening with moulded triangular head, frame cut back for passage of barrels, studded door with large raised fillets and strap hinges, ground floor left has 2-light and 3-light C19 casement and C20 stack in angle with wing to left, first floor left has small 2-light casement and 2-pane light over porch; to right 2 wooden cross windows, probably C19 with iron stanchions in upper parts, two 3-light C20 casement with drip mould and attic 2-light casement with drip mould; wing to right has C20 garage doors and drip mould, loading door and 2-light C20 window with continuous drip mould, small chamfered window frame at attic with drip mould. Left return has ground floor left 3-light casement and two 3-light casements under eaves, moulded door frame to right with re-used strap hinges, one fleur-de-lys, on door, pitched wooden hood; single storey outhouse attached to rear left with 3 door openings. Rear of wing to right has small 2-light attic casement, lean-to in angle with 1/2-glazed door and 2-light casement; rear of wing to left has ground floor opening with chamfered frame and mullions, drip mould, no glazing, drip mould remaining to right, first floor central drip mould, lean-to in angle has heavy door with strap hinges in plain frame. Rear of central range has remains of window at first floor left, large external stack to left, cross window at ground floor left, rear passage door in ovolo-moulded frame and C20 lean-to porch; ground floor right has 2-light casement, first floor right has two 3-light casements. Interior: heavy deep-chamfered and stopped beam to left of passage, C19 straight stair to rear, room in wing to left has beams with slightly shallower chamfer, set laterally, fireplace to end stack has heavy cambered chamfered lintel; first floor left door frame to centre room has chamfered and stopped frame, door with strap hinges, beams as at ground floor; roof over centre range of 5 bays, principal rafters, collars, 2 rows of purlins, roof over wing to left of 3 bays, similar, without collars. At ground floor, room to right of passage has wide stone fireplace to rear, chamfered pointed segmental arch, all deep-chamfered beams without stops; rooms in wing, floor missing, have similar stone fireplace to end wall at ground and first floor, chamfered and stopped door frame in partition wall where only the upright members remain. C19 roof to wing to left, not used as living accommodation at time of survey (April 1985).
