Description
Claverham Court Farmhouse is a farmhouse with origins in the 15th century, a front wing dating to the mid-17th century, and alterations and extensions from the late 18th century, the early-to-mid 19th century, and the 20th century. The farmhouse is built of rubble, with a rendered centre front range, and has a double Roman tiled roof with a ridge stack to the right of the front door. A wing to the left is pantiled, and both wings have gable stacks. The building’s irregular plan is the result of additions over time, with two front wings forming a U-shaped layout.
The front range has two windows, with sash windows containing a wide central pane. A central 6-panelled door is set within a 20th-century gabled porch. The 2-storey wing to the left has two windows on the ground floor, with 20-pane sashes, and sash windows with a wide central pane on the first floor. The gable end of this wing has a 12-pane fixed light at ground floor level and a small 2-light casement at attic level. The taller 2-storey wing to the right, likely dating to the late 18th century, has a sash window and a 10-pane fixed light on the ground floor, and a sash window with a wide central pane on the first floor. The gable end of this wing has a late 19th-century 6-pane light at ground floor and a large 2-pane plate-glass window at first floor.
On the right return of the front wing, there’s an 18-pane sash window in an exposed box at first floor. There is a 20th-century lean-to with a half-glazed door. The gable end of the main range has a 6-pane light at first floor. On the left return of the front wing, there’s a half-glazed door and a 16-pane sash window, along with a 3-light casement with ovolo mullions under the eaves. The rear gable end of the wing has a 2-light attic casement with an ovolo mullion and iron stanchions. A 2-storey lean-to block in the angle to the rear of the wing incorporates a ground floor 2-light casement and a first floor plate-glass sash with sidelights, a 16-pane sash under the eaves and a bellcote on the gable end of the main range.
The rear of the main range has four sashes with a wide central pane at first floor, and includes a glazed lean-to, a 20th-century bay window, a wall built out at the base of the ridge stack, a 2-light casement, and a lean-to with a door featuring strap hinges to the inner side and a 2-light casement to the rear, along with a narrow 2-storey addition to the right. Internally, at the rear of the main range, a 2-light stone window features a moulded mullion and cinquefoiled lights. A former partition wall across the main range has been removed, revealing cambered chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. The fireplace below the ridge stack has a cambered lintel and a bread oven with a 19th-century cast iron door. In the wing to the left, a 3-bay roof has only principal rafters and collars visible, along with chamfered beams with bar and scroll stops at first floor, and a door with a chamfered and stopped frame. Claverham Court Farmhouse formerly served as the court house of Claverham, one of the four tithings of Yatton. It formerly had a free chapel endowed with lands.
