Description
Manor Farmhouse, now a house, was originally built in the early 17th century. Later in the 17th century, a stair tower was added and enclosed by a rear wing. The front of the building was significantly altered in the mid-18th century, along with some internal changes, with further alterations made subsequently. The farmhouse is constructed of rendered rubble with a pantiled roof, featuring ridge and gable stacks.
The original design was a 3-room through-passage plan, which has been extended to form an L-plan with attached outbuildings at an angle to the right. The farmhouse has two and a half storeys and six windows, all sash windows irregularly spaced. A 20th-century French window occupies the ground floor on the left. The third bay from the right features a fine studded door with fleur-de-lys strap hinges and a flat hood. A former stable, slightly lower and now in separate occupation, is attached to the left. Its gable end has a 20th-century casement window at first floor, a lean-to with a 2-light casement, a single light, a door, and a 4-pane light to the side. The main house has a two-span roof created by infilling the L-plan.
The right return has a single-storey outbuilding on the same axis as the main house, with a door and window opening to the rear. The rear wing to the right has a catslide roof with two raking dormers, each containing two panes, and two unglazed openings at ground floor. A single-storey addition is located at the angle to the right, with a small opening and double doors set at eaves height.
The rear of the main house has an addition to the right, infilling the L-plan. The first floor has two 2-light casements to the right and a single light and 2-light casement to the left. The ground floor has two 2-light casements, a flat-roofed porch with an inner plain door with an inset glazed panel, a single light, a French window, and a 2-light casement, all 20th century. A lean-to to the right has a 2-light casement and a single light. To the left, an external stair leads to an upper door of an attached outbuilding, and a door is located to the left. The roof is hipped over the rear wing which is of L-plan design.
Inside, the rear door to the through passage is also studded with fleur-de-lys strap hinges. The room to the right of the passage contains a fireplace (with the ridge stack) featuring chamfered stone jambs and a flat moulded lintel, with an oven recess to the left. It also has chamfered beams and an end wall with an 18th-century cupboard containing shaped shelves, and a linen press with drawers and panelled doors set against the rear wall. Two rooms to the left of the passage have been combined into one and contain an 18th-century cupboard with shaped shelves, chamfered beams, and a blocked fireplace with a high cambered and chamfered lintel and an oven to the right. A heavy door with strap hinges and a chamfered frame cut back for the passage of barrels is set against the rear wall. The wall of the rear wing is battered internally.
At first floor level, one room has chamfered and scroll stopped beams, 19th-century panelling and cupboards to the end wall, with L-hinges. A central room contains a screen wall along the rear passage, with ventilation within the walls, possibly used as a cheese room. The roof over the main range has principal rafters, collars (some cambered), one row of purlins, and a ridge purlin with a plated yoke.
