Description
Gatcombe Mill is an early 19th century watermill, now disused. It is constructed of limeworked rubble with brick window heads and pantile roofs, and retains cast and wrought iron and timber machinery. The west elevation has three storeys and six windows, all with segmental heads; some are 3-light casements, some are blank, and a door is positioned off-centre, repeated directly above. A large segmental-headed cast entry is located off-centre to the right, and the building has a hipped roof. A large lean-to is attached to the south elevation, and a single eaves window is present on the north side. The rear elevation, built into the hillside, shows two storeys with plain windows to the right and left of the entry sluice from the mill pond.
The interior is remarkably complete, featuring machinery including an overshot cast iron wheel with wrought iron buckets on the ground floor, adjacent to a pit wheel with applewood teeth and a great spurwheel with a 20th century guard. A stone nut with an intact lifting mechanism is also present. On the stone floor above are two stones with runs, an auxiliary shaft (now guarded), and water supplied through a cast iron launder with regulator. The second floor houses a sack hoist shaft and drum, with associated traps complete throughout, alongside various bins and an extractor fan.
