Description

Farmhouse. Dating from the 15th century, it was altered in the early 17th and 18th centuries. The farmhouse is constructed of rendered material with a pantile roof and rendered stacks. Originally a late mediaeval house of three rooms and a cross passage, it now has an L-shaped plan. It is two storeys high with attics in catslide dormers. The front has glazing bar sash windows on the ground floor and two-light casements above. A central gabled porch shelters a studded plank door with strap hinges featuring fleur-de-lys terminals and an ovolo moulded surround. A single-bay lean-to is located to the left. A blocked pointed doorway in the lean-to is now hidden by render; on the opposite side of the lean-to, a doorway is visible, featuring a two-centred, hollow chamfered freestone surround. The south-east elevation displays three-light casement windows with ovolo moulded mullions and surrounds. A gabled stair tower with two-light casement windows is located in the re-entrant angle with the rear wing, along with a later lean-to addition.

Inside, ovolo moulded beams feature run-out stops. The ground floor, left-hand room (the hall), has a fine panelled and framed ceiling with bold ovolo-moulded main beams and chamfered joists. A rear newel stair has a jointed newel post. The first-floor east room contains an ashlar fireplace with a four-centred head and an ovolo moulded surround, bearing carved initials RA/M and IA/M on shields in the spandrels. A first-floor room in the wing has a fireplace with a depressed ovolo moulded lintel on rebuilt jambs. Other plank doors have ovolo moulded and chamfered surrounds.
